Beautiful Port Vila harbour

When you see such a scene and feel such a place, you want to share it most with the ones you love. To turn and say, ”Look at that.”

I miss my boys. All of them.

It’s school holidays in Australia and while I’ve been away, my youngest Stevie has learnt to surf. He stood up on that board and caught his first wave…and then wave after wave after that. I should have brought him here. I’m sure we could find some waves to catch in Vanuatu. After sunset, the lights blazed to life on the set of Love Patrol. Yes, Pacific Islanders will be happy to know that Series 2 of this popular Pacific soapie is now in production. I wanted to meet the people behind the scenes, and I was blown away.

Honiara car wash

I have been struck down with an illness. I will spare you the details. As I lie curled up in my hotel bed in Vanuatu, I wanted to share these pictures that make me smile.

Charles and his crew of boys swarmed all over our car. We were parked in the fresh water of Longo River in Honiara. This spot is the local car wash. My driver for the day and good friend Bart told me about this place and I just had to check it out. I have never seen anything like it!

Everyday a constant stream of cars, trucks and buses roll down the hill right into the water. There’s no fancy equipment, just plastic buckets, tins and rags – and loads of energy. These are all school aged boys from the local village. Charles is the oldest – aged around 13 I guess. His crew are even younger – between 8 and 10.

Young idol contestant

A little surprise package in Honiara last night at the opening round of Solo Idol, the Solomon Islands’ own singing talent quest. Eight year old Betsy Luitolo, belted out the lyrics to Maria Carey’s song “Hero”. She is the hero.

And so are the 24 other contestants who made it through the auditions to get here. Solo Idol will continue over the next three months and as the competition progresses, so will the skills and confidence of the young people taking part.

The opening night wasn’t without hiccups – sound system problems, with feedback and crackling microphones and playing the wrong songs. I couldn’t help but admire these young contestants who boldly stepped up on stage one after another and pushed their voices and their smiles out past the distractions. The next round is in 2 weeks’ time and it would be nice if the sound system is fixed and contestants have the opportunity to sing without this extra challenge.
